PHOTOGRAPHING SPEY BAY AT SUNRISE
Early morning can completely change the character of a golf course.
At Spey Bay, arriving before sunrise created an opportunity to photograph the course as the first light began to develop across the Moray Firth, before the course became busy and the conditions changed.
Starting from the ground made it possible to capture the softer light, long shadows and quieter details around the links before moving into aerial photography as the morning developed.
The setting also brought an unexpected extra element, with dolphins visible in the Moray Firth alongside the course. It was a reminder of how closely Spey Bay is connected to its coastal environment and added another layer to the visual story of the morning.
Combining ground photography, aerial imagery and those wider coastal moments created a much broader record of the course and its setting.
WHY EARLY MORNING WORKS SO WELL FOR COURSE PHOTOGRAPHY
Early morning gives a golf course a very different atmosphere from the middle of the day.
At Spey Bay, the low light, long shadows and quieter conditions helped bring out the shape and texture of the course before play began. It also created more opportunities to photograph the links without distraction, giving the images a cleaner and more considered feel.
As the light changed, the photography could move from more atmospheric ground-level images into wider aerial views, showing both the individual holes and the relationship between the course and the Moray Firth.
That combination of timing and changing conditions helps create a more varied image library, giving the club content that feels different from standard daytime course photography.
MORE THAN JUST THE COURSE
Spey Bay’s location on the Moray Firth is a big part of what gives the course its character.
During the morning, dolphins were visible just offshore, adding another element to the photography and reinforcing how closely the course is connected to the surrounding coastline.
That wider setting is important when photographing a golf club. Images of the course itself are essential, but including the landscape, wildlife and environment around it helps create a stronger sense of place.
For Spey Bay, the combination of links golf, open coastal views and activity on the Moray Firth creates content that feels distinctive to the club rather than interchangeable with somewhere else.
